FDI in the United States, Fourth Quarter 2017
Foreign direct investment totaled nearly $60 billion in the fourth-quarter 2017, an eight percent decrease from third-quarter 2017.
DAVOS, SWITZERLAND – The Organization for International Investment (OFII) today hosted its second annual policy roundtable alongside the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
The event featured a discussion between U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, U.S. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX), Governor John Hickenlooper (D-CO) and 14 global chief executives of non-U.S. companies with significant operations in the United States. These insourcing companies – such as Airbus, Nestlé, Siemens and Zurich – represent a significant segment of the U.S. economy, employing more than six million U.S. workers and paying 33 percent higher wages than the economy-wide average.
“Having senior officials from the administration and congress, as well as governors from two major states, demonstrates how important foreign direct investment is to America’s economy,” said Nancy McLernon, president and CEO of OFII. “This one-of-a-kind event in Davos – focused exclusively on U.S. competitiveness for cross-border investment – zeroed in on ways the United States can tap into the experience of global employers in developing a next generation skilled workforce and modernizing our infrastructure.”
“The House has led successful efforts to modernize America’s infrastructure, having just passed a five-year reauthorization bill that provides necessary resources,” said Leader McCarthy. “It was clear from this morning’s discussion that insourcing employers have a strong interest in ensuring that America’s economy remains highly competitive in the global marketplace. It was also clear that a quality infrastructure is a driving force in attracting global businesses – and the jobs they create – to the United States.”
"Colorado has made education for our workforce a priority,” said Governor Hickenlooper. “We are exploring apprenticeships and other programs to ensure we meet the needs of employers and workers. It was beneficial to hear from global executives who have expertise in this area.”
“We had a good conversation about how innovative workforce training is happening at the state level,” said Governor Abbott. “Education is the key to developing a highly skilled workforce, especially the next generation of workers, and we discussed how the private sector and the state can effectively partner on education needs. I am proud to say that Texas is a leader in this area.”
Participating in the meeting were senior executives from Airbus Group SE, Arup Group, Bayer AG, Ericsson, Evonik Industries AG, HSBC Holdings plc, Iberdrola S.A., LafargeHolcim, Lenovo, Nestle S.A., Novartis International AG, Siemens AG, WPP Group plc, and Zurich Insurance Group AG.
